Neurology

Neurology is the branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats all categories of disease or impaired function related to the nervous system and the blood vessels that relate to these structures. The nervous system involves the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, and autonomic nervous system.

At HEALTHPOINTE, our neurologist applies principles of physiology and anatomy to help identify the disorder and the implicated anatomic structures. Medical testing, most commonly electromyography (EMG), is often employed, along with a clinical history of the symptoms. The neurologist determines whether the problem is temporary or permanent, and if medical or surgical treatment is recommended.

Neurological symptoms can include pain, numbness, mental confusion, headache, and dizziness, all of which can significantly impact a person’s life. Neurological conditions range from common to rare—the very rare conditions are usually hereditary or congenital. Common conditions include seizures, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, dementia, and sleep disorders.
